Week 10 already and as I write this, I am preparing to launch the website for ‘The Diary of a Digital Nobody’. All previous 9 weeks of both My 2022 Diary and My Podcast Journey have been loaded, plus other posts I’ve added to the P2 site. It has taken a while, but I now have a file directory with .docx versions of each post and that has allowed me to catch a few spelling and grammatical errors.
I’m looking at my written diary and I haven’t been saying what I have been doing each evening, so now I’ve got to think what has happened. I know that I’ve been spending at least 2 hours may be 3 on podcast activities, all except Monday when I went out to play Bridge. Must get into the habit of writing in my diary each night – it was one of my objectives after all.
I’ve just replied to a comment from Richard where he said you must be realistic with your time, set your goals and try to achieve that, not everything is possible – I confessed to spending a lot of time writing and not recording, but equally I don’t want to give anything up, not just yet. Getting the website published will feel like an achievement and I’m hoping that it will release some time.
The regular posts from Richard, Georgina, and now Drue encouraging the P2 community to engage in a community deserves some of my time. When I look back at previous posts and comments there are some good points, and there is a history of 18 months before I joined to go through at some time. It would be lovely to hear from others. I’ve been thinking whether I can afford the time to comment. I’ve been thinking whether I’m making too many comments. Would others comment more if I didn’t comment first?
I see great value in a community and in some of the discussions I’ve been having with Richard about LinkedIn trying to create a community where people engage authentically and with honesty is I believe a key part of whatever brand you are aiming to create. So, I will continue to contribute because the value of the course we are all on, is not just in the recorded videos but the P2 community, I think without it, it would be just like any other course.
This whole discussion about a community which has been made in comments over the last few weeks has certainly made me think about how I might encourage a community on the back of Maximo Secrets sometime in the future.
On Wednesday I attended the WordPress webcast – Sneak Peek: Full Site Editing-March, it had over 600 attendees. My new website is using the Twenty TwentyTwo (Blue) theme which is one of the themes that support Full Site Editing (FSE), so it was useful. Here, for me, were some of the key points:
- The theme is just a starting point, all parts are made of blocks that can be configured without code.
- Not all themes support FSE. Try searching with feature:full-site-editing
- There is free training for FSE on WordPress.org, looks like three sets of training, here is the first https://learn.wordpress.org/course/simple-site-design-with-full-site-editing/
- Export all content from Tools –> Export –> Export All –> Download
- Create a new site with required theme using Free account and then Tools –> Import or drag/drop.
- There are templates for different styles of page. Template Parts can exist in multiple pages, for example Header and Footer. You may need to be editing the Template Part rather than the Template or an individual Page.
- Appearance –> Editor will take you into the full-site editing and give you access to the Templates or Template Parts. You can create new ones of these.
- There is currently only one font – TimesNewRoman, more are to come.
- Standard Blocks that you have in Gutenburg editor will continue to be enhanced.
Through Saturday and then Sunday morning I played with the FSE to try and finalise the new website. I was changing the Home page, turning it into a static page without the posts as I have a separate page for Latest Posts. One final check of all pages; where have all my posts gone, why is the text I added to the Home page on all the other pages? Oh NO!!
What I eventually learnt was that the Home page is from the Page template and not the Home template. Removing the Query Loop Block from within the Editor (Beta) is I think changing all the pages that have used the template name at the top of the screen, Page in this case. As I write this, I’m still confused, and I’m thinking that a priority will be to embark on the course mentioned earlier otherwise it will be trial and error and no doubt this will burn a lot of time, as it has already. For example, I couldn’t find a way of changing the page I called Home to use the Home template. When I was changing what looked like the home page, was this changing the template called Page, or only all pages created from the template, and if the latter, then how do you change the template?
Gosh, that sounds confusing, but I’m going to leave the text in the last paragraph as is because it might help me to backtrack and figure out what is going on. I don’t expect any of the course administrators to help here. I’ll embark on the course and hopefully all will become clearer.
And now for the fanfare. The Diary of a Digital Nobody is now live. https://thediaryofadigitalnobody.com
I now have a home for both podcasts and other obsessions that fluctuate in and out of my life. The next step will be to add photos to each week of My 2022 Diary, but I heard in one of the courses that you need to compress the files so that they load quicker, so I’ll need to investigate what this really means.
The first additional item to add to the digital scrapbook will be the first blog posts I wrote when I started out called Paperback Secrets, which I think is still hidden away somewhere on Google – ah found it, http://paperbacksecrets.blogspot.com
So, what will be the objectives for Week 11?
- Investigate what I need to do to compress photos and other graphic files.
- Do a trial record of Episode 1 of ‘The Diary of a Digital Nobody’. I’ll use Audacity for this.
- Complete and proofread the documentation of six episodes of ‘Maximo Bite Size’.
- Start the FSE training course on WordPress.
- Maintain a daily diary (it needs to become a habit)
- Revisit the objectives I set in week 4, now considering both podcasts.
- Start learning how to edit using Descript and the captured Zoom calls.
I know I won’t get down to the last two bullets, but I don’t want to lose sight of them.
